It is important to clarify that every homeowner's policy needs to have coverage for "Back-up of sewers and drains". Even if you don't have a basement! If your policy does not have that coverage, GET IT! Most policies do not automatically come with it and unless you ask for it or have a great agent to suggest it, you may fall short in the event of a loss.
That being said, ask yourself the question of "how much coverage is enough coverage?"
The answer is determined by how much damage could be caused to your home and personal belongings such as; Furnace, Washer, Dryer Furniture, Electronics, Carpeting, Walls etc., if the sewers were to back up from too much rain or the sump-pump failed? You need to check your homeowner's policy to decide if what you currently have as coverage is really enough?
If you currently carry $5000 in water back-up, it may be wise to increase it to $10,000. If you carry $10,000, perhaps an increase to $15,000 or $20,000 might be in order? Remember, your reimbursement for a claim is subject to your policy deductible too.
With all the rain we have had in the Midwest alone, more coverage is never a bad decision!
